James Harden broke through the record books after Monday night's 39-point effort against the New Orleans Pelicans. The Houston Rockets star elevated his average to 37.3 with the latest performance — the highest the NBA has seen in the last 50 seasons.

The Beard also owns the highest scoring mark since Jordan posted a 37.1 scoring average in his third year in the league (1983-84). Harden hasn't been shooting all that well, but his penchant for putting the ball in the basket hasn't been affected due to his poor acumen.

“I just go out there and play basketball,” Harden said of his scoring prowess, according to ESPN's Royce Young. “Try to be assertive as I can. We're really pissed about losing those three games — that's what we're thinking about [with the first 10 games]. I think defensively we're getting better. We've been really good these last few games. And that's our mindset, just continue to get better. Like, individually, I don't care. I've done a lot of good things, pretty good things individually, so the most important thing is winning and finding ways to get better.”

The Beard is shooting an uncharacteristic 40.7% from the floor and 29.8% from deep — but shooting percentages don't matter as much — especially when Harden is attempting a career-high 14.1 3-pointers per game and 15.1 trips to the foul line, which he's converted at an 88.1% clip.

Harden has shot the ball 20 or more times in eight of his first 10 games and has attempted double-digit free throws in all 10. At this pace, he won't have an issue being the highest-scoring player since a 26-year-old Wilt Chamberlain averaged a monstrous 44.8 points per game in 1962-63.
