Jeff Van Gundy is set to interview for the Houston Rockets head coaching post, which will mark the end of the first round of talks for the organization.

Per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets will meet with the veteran head coach on Wednesday. Feigen writes:

“But as the Rockets seek a coach who can make them the contenders they still believe they should be, with the first round of interviews to be completed with Jeff Van Gundy on Wednesday, there is an increasing sense that the path to the Finals is every bit as tough as it has been in their recent seasons of falling short.”

Van Gundy's last coaching stint was with the Rockets from the 2004-05 to the 2006-07 season. But he hasn't stayed away from the sidelines as he worked as a coach for Team USA since 2017. To recall, Van Gundy started his NBA head coaching career with the New York Knicks in the mid-90s. He guided the team to multiple playoff appearances including an NBA Finals berth in 1999.

Van Gundy is one of the candidates the Rockets are eyeing to replace Mike D'Antoni, who left the team after their second-round playoff exit. Earlier this week, Tyronn Lue was in town for an interview. Lue is currently an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers.

Earlier reports reveal that the Rockets have also met with lead assistant candidates such as Stephen Silas of the Mavericks, Wes Unseld Jr. of the Nuggets, and David Vanterpool of the Timberwolves, along with former Nets coach Kenny Atkinson.
