Carmelo Anthony’s time with the Atlanta Hawks is not expected to last very long, as it’s already been reported earlier that the Houston Rockets are eyeing to sign the 10-time All-Star forward to a veteran minimum contract worth just $2.4 million once he’s able to find his way out of his present situation.

Anticipating Anthony’s arrival to his team, Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni intends to use whatever vestige of offensive prowess the forward still have at this point of his career, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports.

“#Rockets believe Mike D’Antoni will extract every ounce of #Carmelo’s remaining offensive arsenal – trail 3s, catch-and-shoot, small ball 4 pop man for CP/Harden – maybe more imp, HOU also believes Melo has evolved from his Knicks’ days and in turn, will embrace his newfound role.”

The Rockets were among the highest-scoring teams last season. They finished second behind the Golden State Warriors with 112.4 points per game. That said, their high productivity on offense is not built upon efficiency, but rather on volume of shots, particularly from behind the arc. The Rockets were only 15th in field goal percentage, but first on three-point attempts per game.

In Houston, Anthony will not be “the man,” as that role belongs to James Harden, so the challenge for D’Antoni will be to convince the Syracuse product to take on a less shiny role. If anything, Melo will be at least a decent replacement for the Rockets’ losses of Luc Mbah a Moute and Trevor Ariza, who both left the team via free agency.

How Carmelo Anthony will fit into that system is up to Mike D’Antoni, who mentored the player for two years back in their New York Knicks days.
