Houston Rockets point guard Russell Westbrook logged another triple-double on Saturday, as he helped his team to a hard-fought 126-123 victory against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Westbrook recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists, en route to his 139th career triple-double, passing the great Magic Johnson for second all-time. Following the historic performance, the former Most Valuable Player winner described what this achievement meant to him.
“It’s a blessing,” Westbrook said of his latest triple-double feat, via The Athletic's Sam Amick. “Give nothing but thanks to the Man above for allowing me to be able to go out and play and compete. It’s something I never, ever take for granted. I know nowadays getting triple-doubles seems normal, but I take pride, I take a lot of energy, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of things I do off of the floor to prepare myself to be able to compete every single night and play at a high level.”
As Westbrook so aptly put it, triple-doubles have become somewhat of a novelty these days, and in truth, he is partly, if not mostly to blame for the same. Nevertheless, none of us should overlook the type of hard work he puts in behind the scenes to be able to be one of the best players in the game today.
Westbrook went on to say that this was quite an emotional moment for him as well, given how so many people counted him out at such a young age.
“For me, that’s a great accomplishment, especially growing up and never even thinking I would be playing in the NBA,” added Westbrook. “Now I’m being able to be in the history books.”
Westbrook and the Rockets logged their first win of the team's new era on Saturday, following an opening night defeat against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.
