Given everything that has been going on in the nation today, there is no denying that this year's Juneteenth holiday is going to be the most relevant it has ever been in decades. According to reports, Houston Rockets star Russell Westbrook intends to take part in the commemoration of the holiday in Tulsa.

Yahoo Sports NBA insider Chris Haynes reports that the 31-year-old point guard will be joining in on the Juneteenth festivities via an online live stream. The event will be going on while President Donald Trump holds a rally in the city:

Juneteenth commemorates a major step in the abolition of slavery on June 19, 1865. Ironically, despite that momentous event going down a century and a half ago, African Americans are still dealing with systemic racism to this very day.

This is why Westbrook is taking a stand and making sure he shows his full support to the Tulsa celebration of Juneteenth. This is far from the first time the former league MVP has involved himself in the socio-political sphere. Just recently, it was announced that Westbrook himself would be producing a gripping documentary about the horrific Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. Per Wikipedia, this event has been labeled as “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history.”

The NBA is likewise making its voice heard in terms of supporting the celebrations of Juneteenth. For the first time in league history, it has been revealed that the league will be providing all its employees with a paid leave for the holiday.
