There is reportedly troubling brewing between Chris Paul and the Houston Rockets over a handshake agreement made by previous ownership.

It was previously widely accepted that the Rockets would offer Chris Paul a super-max deal this offseason, which the veteran guard was reported to have a wink-wink agreement with the franchise for just that to happen.

According to Chris Broussard of Fox Sports, not so fast my friends:

“From what I'm told, there's tension now between Houston and Chris Paul, because there was definitely some type of ‘handshake, wink-wink, we're gonna max you out' … but now they're not so sure. Houston, with good reason, doesn't want to do that.

“But they got an out because they got new ownership. So Daryl Morey can go to Chris Paul and be like, ‘I want to do it, but the new owner doesn't want to give you five years, or four years.'

This would obviously be good reason for Paul to be angry, but it would be a smart move by Houston to not marry itself to a 33-year-old for five more years. Then again, it can haunt them down the line, as free agents might not trust them if this report ends up being true.

Also, one has to factor in the source at the moment, as no one else is reporting any such issue. For now, time will tell.
