In spite of rumors that forward James Nunnally could be headed back overseas after being waived by the Houston Rockets on Monday, there is still a chance he could return to the Rockets, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.
Nunnally was waived in order to create space for big man Kenneth Faried, whom Houston brought aboard after the Brooklyn Nets released him. However, the Rockets also traded Carmelo Anthony to the Chicago Bulls for cash considerations on Monday.
Houston only needed to open up one roster spot for Faried, but because the Anthony trade would not go through until Tuesday and the Rockets wanted Faried to be available for their game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday evening, the Rockets had to waive Nunnally.
Nunnally knew that could be the case, as he had his packed bags with him on Houston's East Coast road trip.
However, with the Anthony trade now official, there is still a chance that the Rockets could bring Nunnally back.
Houston had originally signed Nunnally to a 10-day contract on Jan. 16, and Iko states that there is “optimism” that another 10-day deal could be offered to the 28-year-old.
That being said, the Rockets are also eyeing other candidates, so it is entirely plausible that Nunnally has played his last game as a Rocket.
Nunnally played in two games for Houston, scoring nine points in 19 minutes of action while making three of his 13 field goal attempts. All three of his makes and 12 of his attempts were from beyond the arc.
