The Colorado Rockies sent an $18.4 million qualifying offer to shortstop Trevor Story, who is set to become a free agent, per Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. The two-time All-Star has 11 days to accept the one-year deal but is almost certain to decline it.

Story posted a slash line of .251/.329/.471 this season while hitting 24 home runs and stealing 20 bases. Even in a down year, the 28-year-old was fairly productive and drew interest at the trade deadline. Colorado's decision not to trade him at the deadline was puzzling, considering the team was not close to the playoffs.

The Rockies won just 74 games last season and opted to trade away their franchise star, third baseman Nolan Arenado, before the season, which did not sit well with Story. The direction of the team and the front office's decision to trade a marquee player and close friend of Story makes them seem like longshots to bring him back.

Colorado began its offseason by extending first baseman C.J. Cron and starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela. Outfielder Charlie Blackmon is also expected to be back after exercising his player option.

Along with Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Javier Baez, Story is one of the biggest names in the pool of free agent shortstops. Sending the qualifying offer now ensures the Rockies will get a compensatory draft pick from an opposing team if Story leaves.
