Kris Bryant agreeing to a massive contract with the Colorado Rockies was one of the most surprising moves of the offseason. The former MVP signed for $182 million after being pursued by plenty of teams. The Rockies swooped in and signed him to a massive deal.

So far, Colorado has been one of the best teams in the majors. They have a 6-2 record thanks to Bryant and phenomenal starts from C.J. Cron and Elias Diaz. The Rockies moving on from two All-Star infielders made the Bryant signing confusing, but it has been a rousing success so far.

Bryant told Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic that he didn't base his entire decision on whether a team was a so-called “contender” since he has already won a ring. He also said that those types of decisions have a tendency to backfire anyway.

“We were talking to teams that may have been better ‘on paper,’” Bryant said. “But I’ve seen so many guys want to chase the ring or sign free-agent deals with so-called contenders and they’ve yet to make the playoffs. So to me, it’s not guaranteed.”

Bryant also explained that being on an underdog team is a fun experience. He helped the Chicago Cubs overcome their historic championship drought and is now on a Rockies team that has never won a title yet.

“I’m all for a good story and I’m all for re-writing history,” Bryant said. “We did that in Chicago. Nobody expected the Cubs to win in 2015. We were still the lovable losers and we changed the culture there. Now they’re expected to win and I want to do the same here.”

Colorado has much more work to do before becoming a contender. With Bryant, though, they are one big step closer.
