The Colorado Rockies made their path very clear for the 2021 season when they traded Nolan Arenado in the offseason. That sent into motion a plan for the franchise to reboot, to an extent of which that was unknown.

Fast forward to now, and the Rockies are near the cellar of the NL West and well off the mark for any thoughts of the postseason this year. As a result, they will sell if anything at the MLB Trade Deadline.

Trevor Story's name has been brought up in trade rumor discussions ever since the Arenado trade. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it seemed almost a foregone conclusion that the Rockies would trade away the former all-star. Now, it sounds like keeping him past the deadline may be a legitimate option, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

So, barring an injury to another contender’s shortstop, it would not be a shock for the Rockies to keep Story, make him a qualifying offer and receive a compensation pick when he departs. That, after all, is how they landed Story in the first place – with the 45th pick as compensation for the loss of reliever Octavio Dotel in 2011.

Rosenthal notes that there may not be many buyers interested in a rental shortstop who has a park-adjusted OPS that sits at 8% below the league average. Still, there's no doubting Story's talent but the market may dictate the Rockies keeping him past the deadline.
