On Monday night, the NFL played its first game in Mexico since 2005. Amid some controversy, the Oakland Raiders eventually topped the Houston Texans for a 27-20 win.

The battle of division leaders was overshadowed by some questionable calls by the officials, a green laser pointer shined in Brock Osweiler's eyes, and a homophobic chant that rang through the stadium on kickoffs and punts.

But, before kickoff, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed pleasure with the reception from the city and the festivities surrounding the game.

From an interview with ESPN's John Sutcliffe on NFL Live:

“It's been an incredible success so far,” Goodell prior to Monday night's game. “I'm optimistic we'll be back.

“We're going to get to work right away on this … This is a priority for us. We see the passion that's happening here and the fan's interest in this game continues to explode. We want to feed that. … We want to continue that relationship and be back for more.”

Goodell also addressed previous negative comments made by President-elect Donald Trump regarding Mexico:

“I don't see that changing our perspective at all,” Goodell said. “For us, this is about the future and continuing to grow and to reach more fans. … This isn't about politics.

“For us, this is about uniting people. I think you'll see fans in Mexico enjoying America's favorite sport, football, and that's a great thing for us to all come together behind.”
