The Kansas City Royals made a move that reached heights the franchise has never seen before when they signed all-star catcher Salvador Perez to a four-year, $82 million extension. The signing, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, is the largest deal in team history.

It's a noteworthy deal certainly for Kansas City and it comes for a catcher who has had an incredible career for the Royals. It may come as a bit of a surprise for a 30-year old who missed all of the 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and only played in 37 of a possible 60 games in 2020. When on the field, though, there's no doubting what Perez brings to this team.

A six-time All-Star, Perez is still one of the most reliable catchers in the entire MLB when healthy.

It continues an offseason for Kansas City that has seen them add a couple of notable names in Carlos Santana and Andrew Benintendi. While all the attention in the American League Central is being given to the Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins, the Royals are in a phase where they are still trying to build towards the future while also adding some established, exciting pieces for the present.

Keeping Salvador around is the right move for Kansas City. He's well respected and well-liked by the entire clubhouse and brings a calming presence to a team that does have a handful of young players already on the major league roster. If he's able to provide what he has in the past, it's a win-win signing for Kansas City and Perez.
