Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras could end up finding a new home in the majors ahead of this season’s trade deadline.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman noted that a “big price tag” is expected for Contreras, who is set to become a free agent after this season. Heyman further added that when it comes to the New York Mets’ interest in the veteran catcher, the current NL East leaders “aren’t likely to give up the prospects” that would be necessary in order to complete such a trade with the Cubs.

Heyman recently relayed a message from a person within the Mets organization that among catchers who will be available at the MLB trade deadline, Contreras is set to be the “only game in town.”

In James McCann’s absence after he underwent surgery on his left wrist, Mets manager Buck Showalter has rolled with a one-two punch of Tomas Nido and Patrick Mazeika at the catcher position. Overall, McCann’s status for when he will make a return to action is still up in the air, as he has been featuring in rehab assignments as of late.

As mentioned, Contreras will hit free agency following the 2022 season. He reportedly already has an eye on what he plans to ask for later this year, as he aspires to sign off on a contract deal worth at least $100 million.

Contreras has been a bright spot amid the Cubs’ recent woes in June. He has logged a .292 batting average to go along with four home runs and eight RBI recorded over 13 games played in the month.

The Cubs currently sit in last place in the NL Central standings with a 23-40 record.
