The Buffalo Sabres and Jack Eichel are still in a state of cold war. But while both parties await for a resolution as to how they would move forward with regards to the proper treatment for Eichel's injury, the Sabres have made a splash elsewhere. According to The Athletic, the Sabres have inked Casey Mittelstadt to a new contract.

The Buffalo Sabres have re-signed forward Casey Mittelstadt to a three-year contract that carries a $2.5 million average annual value, the team announced on Thursday.

Mittelstadt, a first round pick (eighth overall) by the Sabres in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, is coming off his best season yet in the NHL. He appeared in 41 games in the 2020-21 NHL season and collected 10 goals (three power play scores) and 12 assists while playing a career-high 15.53 minutes per contest. By signing Mittelstadt, the Sabres added a bit of security at the center position and have at least checked one of the boxes on their offseason to-do list.

So far in his NHL career, Mittelstadt has 27 goals and 34 assists. He also sports a career 52.2 CF% and 99.0 PDO.

Eichel, who's also a center, has yet to push forward with a treatment to his injured neck, with his camp and the Sabres completely on different pages on the matter.
