COVID-19 continues to take its toll. The New Orleans Saints are aware of this. Mercedes-Benz Superdome officials recently informed its citizens on the latest updates regarding the global pandemic.

“We can confirm that in the last few weeks, 32 of the 275-plus daily workers on the project have tested positive for COVID-19,” read the statement.

The aforementioned workers were part of the team tasked to renovate the 45-year old home of the Saints. Operations were allowed by Louisiana officials who called the renovations “essential” despite the threat of COVID-19.

Officials later said that the affected workers have undergone strict isolation measures while being treated. They will not be allowed to go back to work unless they are tested negative.

Louisiana is currently in Phase 2 of reopening establishments as part of the ongoing national efforts to revive the economy. However, the order has witnessed an alarming trend, with hospitalizations increasing in recent days. Officials explained that other states that have likewise recently opened are dealing with a similar scenario. The Saints have to keep tabs on this and be prepared.

“This post-Memorial Day increase is consistent with what 21 other states, not including Louisiana, are experiencing at this stage of the pandemic as more restrictions have been lifted for travel, shopping, and work.”

The NFL is no exception, as workers have also been tested positive in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, who are busy with the construction of SoFi Stadium and Allegiant Stadium, the new homes of the Rams, Chargers, and Raiders.

Currently, the Saints are set to open their 2020 campaign by hosting the new-look Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 13.
