New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara burst onto the scene in the NFL in the 2017 season as one of the most exciting young backfield talents in the league.

According to ESPN, Kamara's strong first campaign has landed him a nomination for the ESPYS award for this year's breakout athlete.

The 22-year-old is certainly a deserving candidate for this award as he quickly became a highly productive talent from the get-go in his rookie year after being taken in the third round of last year's draft. There had been no expectation that he would put together the type of campaign he did due to him being a mid-round draft selection while sitting third on the depth chart behind offseason addition former league MVP Adrian Peterson.

However, it didn't take long for him to show his unique ability on the field as he proved to be the second half of a dynamic duo in the backfield for the Saints alongside Mark Ingram as the two became the first pair of running back teammates to have 1,500 scrimmage yards in a single season. Kamara was highly impressive proving to be a unique dual-threat option as he became just the third rookie running back to compile more than 600 rushing and 600 receiving yards in a single season.

He also set the franchise record with 1,554 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns. Kamara's production helped him join Hall of Famer Gale Sayers as the only rookies in NFL history to have at least five rushing touchdowns (eight), five receiving touchdowns (five) and a kickoff-return touchdown. This stellar rookie campaign should put the 22-year-old in serious contention to earn this ESPYS award next month.
