The NFL is allowing players to display names of victims of systemic racism on their helmets this season. Alvin Kamara of the New Orleans Saints is one of the players that will seize the opportunity to do so. According to Amie Just of The Times-Picayune, Kamara will pay tribute to Ahmaud Arbery in Week 1 versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Back in May, a video surfaced of Arbery being slain in Georgia in February of 2020 by two white males who seemed to have a racial intent behind their crimes. As a result of the tragic video, athletes from the Saints and across major sports, including Chris Paul and Stephen Curry of the NBA, shared their reactions to the news.

For Kamara, a Georgia native, Arbery's death hit close to home. Therefore, the three-time Pro Bowler is going to be sporting Arbery's name on the back of his helmet when the Saints open the season versus the Buccaneers.

Besides Arbery, countless African Americans have died in police custody or due to police-related actions in recent months. Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Jacob Blake are three names that have resonated with everyone. While Taylor and Floyd died, Blake was paralyzed from the waist down after being shot by police seven times.

In response to the Blake shooting, the Saints recently wore his name across the front of their helmets in practice. Even though the team was working on ways to incite change, they were bringing more awareness to the situation.

Kamara recently returned to the Saints after a short hiatus from the team that was believed to be contract related. When he does take the field for the first time in 2020, Kamara will be honoring Arbery and doing his part in continuing the conversation against racial injustice.
