Will the New Orleans Saints' playoff run be the final series of games of Drew Brees' career?

The longtime Saints quarterback has hinted at retirement in the past couple of seasons. There is a widespread belief Brees could hang up the cleats at the end of the 2020 NFL season.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis spoke about Brees' future during a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, stating the team will give the future Hall of Famer time to reach a decision:

“When you have a quarterback that’s — I don’t like to say at his age, because that doesn’t sound right, but it’s true — it’s been year to year for him for a while,” Loomis said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “It’s up to him each year to determine: ‘Do I want to play next year or not?’ We give him his space, we give him time at the end of the season to determine that, and we’ll see what happens next year. I’m not counting him out. It’s going to be entirely up to him.”

Brees has long been a franchise staple. He has made 12 Pro Bowls and been named first-team All-Pro as New Orleans' quarterback, also leading the Saints to a Lombardi Trophy in 2009.

The veteran had another strong season in 2020, going 9-3 in 12 starts. Brees completed 70.5 percent of his passes and threw for close to 3,000 yards, with 24 touchdowns against six interceptions. But he also suffered a fairly scary injury, with multiple broken ribs and a fractured rib.

Perhaps Brees will go out in a blaze of glory in leading the Saints to another Super Bowl title. Regardless, the decision to return or retire is his alone.
