The NFL is strict when it comes to enforcing its uniform rules. However, they can also be lenient when those violations come with good intention, as was the case with New Orleans Pelicans outside linebacker Demario Davis.

Davis was slapped with a fine amounting to $7,017 for wearing an item of clothing that had a personal message to it. This has been in place ever since Jim McMahon used his headbands to deliver controversial messages for the entire world to see.

However, ESPN’s Mike Triplett revealed that the league has since overturned the fine and returned the owed money to the linebacker. The message on Davis’ headband was anything but controversial in the first place — it had “Man of God” written to it as a profession of his Christian faith. Moreover, he’s not worn the headband ever since getting fined in Week 3.

Moreover, he turned the controversy into an uplifting opportunity, as he has raised more than $30,000 in sales for his “Man of God, “Woman of God”, and “Child of God” headbands that he will donate to St. Dominic Hospital in his home state of Mississippi. He will also give the money returned to the hospital as well.

The linebacker and locker room leader had nothing but great words to say about the overruled fine:

“That’s a huge win,” Davis said Wednesday while wearing the “Man of God” headband at his locker. “We’ve been able to turn it into a positive and use it to raise funds for a hospital that’s trying to rebuild this emergency room. And just to have the support of the community — and pretty much nationwide — it’s been amazing. And then on top of that, being blessed to win the appeal and be able to take those funds that I was already counting as a loss and further contribute to the cause, it’s just a major blessing. And I don’t take it for granted.”

With this debacle finally behind him, Davis can now focus on helping the Saints win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and improve to a 5-1 record. And we can be sure that he will try to honor his God by playing it out on the field.
