New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said Wednesday the team expects quarterback Drew Brees to make his retirement decision shortly.

Payton said during an appearance on PFT Live he thinks the organization will have more information on Brees' future in the coming week, reiterating the Saints will wait for the future Hall of Famer to make his decision:

“I think within the next week, week-and-a-half we’ll get a little bit more information relative to Drew,” Payton said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “We’ll wait on Drew’s announcement.”

The situation with Brees is playing out almost identically to last year, when the veteran signal-caller said he would think things over before making a decision.

Still, the circumstances are slightly different.

Brees had reportedly hinted he would retire at the end of the season ahead of the Saints' playoff loss at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He sounded less sure after the game, saying he would discuss the matter with his family.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said last week he still believes there is a chance Brees could play, adding New Orleans has other areas of the team to address as they await further word on Brees' future.

Payton did have a bit more to say on the quarterback position Wednesday. He hinted the Saints could choose to re-sign Jameis Winston, possibly offering a glimpse at the team's future under center were Brees to retire.

There are a lot of moving parts for the Saints this offseason, but they should get more clarity at the quarterback spot within the next week or two.
