The New Orleans Saints received a scary diagnosis Monday when it was determined quarterback Drew Brees had suffered multiple broken ribs and a collapsed lung during the team's Week 10 win over the San Francisco 49ers.

It was previously reported doctors were telling Brees to be cautious especially with respect to the damaged lung, rendering his future status unknown.

New Orleans has yet to make a determination regarding Brees' official status. For now, the veteran signal-caller will seek out other opinions to determine the severity of his injuries, per Ed Werder of ESPN.

Brees is all but guaranteed to miss this weekend's game against the Atlanta Falcons. As Werder noted, the Saints are looking for more clarity as to just how much time the former All-Pro could miss.

The 41-year-old is trying to keep his spirits high.

Brees took to Instagram with a heartwarming picture of his “medical team,” which included his two sons and young daughter.

Still, this is a tough loss for the Saints. Brees had come into this past Sunday's game playing some of his best football of the year. New Orleans has won six straight since starting the year 1-2, but one slip-up could see the Saints lose their grip on the NFC South.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are just a half-game back of the division lead at 7-3. New Orleans owns the tiebreaker over the Bucs, having won both head-to-head matchups, but the Saints need to take care of business in the event Brees is sidelined for an extended period.

Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill could both see reps under center for the Saints in the near future.
