Although the New Orleans Saints are currently riding a three-game win streak, it is safe to say they are looking forward to the return of quarterback Drew Brees. It appears he is well on track in his recovery from an injury to his right thumb.

Brees was initially given a six-week timetable after injuring the thumb in Week 2 versus the Los Angeles Rams. He recently provided an encouraging update on his progress and indicated that he is close to being able to throw the ball, via Jeff Duncan of TheAthletic.com.

Drew Brees said on WWL radio tonight that the rehab on his surgically repaired right thumb is going as planned & he hopes to be throwing an NFL ball “sooner rather than later. … From a rehab perspective, we are fast-tracking this thing as fast as we can.”

It is safe to say that Brees' comments are music to the ears of Saints fans everywhere. He has taken an optimistic approach with his recovery and indicated that he would like to come back sooner than he was expected. While his current timetable has him returning in time for an NFC South matchup versus the Atlanta Falcons, it will be interesting to see if he can make it back before their bye in Week 9.

For now, New Orleans is happy to leave the offense in the capable hands of backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater while Brees continues to recover. It certainly took Bridgewater some time to find his footing, however, he finally managed to enjoy a breakout performance by completing 26-of-34 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns in Week 5.
