The NFL and NFLPA have finally established a safe of safety protocols for teams to abide by during training camp. However, it seems New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has found a way to double down on his efforts.

Among Brees' notable in-game habits is his licking of the fingers in between plays. According to ESPN's Mike Triplett, the veteran is attempting to cut down on it ahead of the 2020 NFL season:

“Trying to avoid it, but it has been so habitual for so long. You don’t realize how much you touch your face and lick your fingers until COVID hit.”

Drew Brees' comments are certainly intriguing considering professional athletes can often be superstitious when it comes to maintaining their performance routine. Regardless, it is hardly worth the risk for him at this point in his career with a family at home.

Of course, this could very well be easier said than done for Brees. Licking his fingertips has long been a notable quirk of his and it may take some time to eliminate complete. Although it remains to be seen if he will be able to get it down by the time the 2020 campaign rolls around, it is encouraging to see him making efforts on his part.

The switch-up from Brees should help to raise awareness for other players that may be unnecessarily exposing themselves and others throughout the course of a game. It will be interesting to see if cameras are able to catch him giving into his habit during the season.
