The New Orleans Saints will need to move forward without their longtime head coach Sean Payton, who announced that he intended to step down as head coach on Tuesday. However, for an organization that hadn't enjoyed much success in the early going, Payton's tenure was a breath of fresh air and deserves some proper reflection. Saints legend Drew Brees spoke to the team's website and spoke about his time with Payton.

“When I think about Sean Payton, he was this blend of, like, the exact way that I would want a head coach to be. His influences from Bill Parcells and others certainly brought out some of that old school mentality and that old school toughness and the kind of thing that we needed when he was first building this program back in 2006. But also this blend of, open-door policy.”

Saints legend Drew Brees reflected on a number of things about Sean Payton, including his initial reaction to the head coach. However, this quote perhaps speaks best to what Payton meant to Brees and the Saints.

Payton brought an old-school mentality and toughness to the sideline in New Orleans, but he was also always there when his players needed him.

Sean Payton was, as Drew Brees so aptly put it, the exact way a player would want their head coach to be.
