Bad officiating just seems to follow the New Orleans Saints.

After a horrendous no-call played a role in costing the Saints a trip to the Super Bowl last year, the officials nearly cost New Orleans again in its season opener on Monday night.

At the end of the first half, the referees cost the Saints 15 seconds, which resulted in kicker Will Lutz having to attempt—and miss—a 56-yard field goal. Had the officials noticed the clock error, New Orleans could have potentially gotten closer to make the kick more manageable for Lutz.

The Saints still won the game, emerging with a 30-28 victory over the Houston Texans, but Drew Brees was understandably not happy about the mishap afterward.

“I still don’t know what the deal was,” quarterback Drew Brees said, according to Katherine Terrell of The Athletic. “Someone came up to me in the locker room and acknowledged that a mistake was made, that 10 seconds should not have run off but they should’ve had 31 seconds left. Instead, we only had 16. So, listen, that can’t happen. I mean, that’s a game-changer, right? We had to kick a 58-yard field goal or whatever it was. … If we had 15 more seconds, are you kidding me? We’re going to get closer. That’s a game-changer. That can’t happen.”

Just imagine what the reaction would have been if the Saints would have lost to the Texans by a field goal. My goodness.

New Orleans will now head on the road to take on the Los Angeles Rams in a much-anticipated NFC Championship Game rematch next Sunday. Both teams are 1-0.
