The New Orleans Saints suffered a rather big loss this offseason, as Pro Bowl center Max Unger decided to retire.
Obviously, that means Drew Brees will have to become accustomed to taking snaps from someone else, and given that Unger played 67 of his 68 regular season and playoff games with the Saints during his four-year run, that may be a difficult transition.
“Obviously, Max was a tremendous leader and a guy that you don’t just snap your fingers and replace,” Brees said, according to Josh Katzenstein of The New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Brees understands it is going to be tough, but he also knows it's just a matter of finding a rhythm as he works with all four centers currently on New Orleans' roster.
“I just make my way down the line,” he said. “It could be the fourth- or fifth-string guy; I want to take snaps with him. My mindset is no matter who is in there, I got to be able to get the snap from him, right? I got to be able to find that rhythm with them, and we have to be able to execute. Regardless of who it is at the end, we’ll have time on task together.”
The Saints are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they captured the NFC South division title courtesy of winning an NFL-best 13 games. They then went on to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round of the playoffs before losing in heartbreaking and controversial fashion to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.
Brees made his 12th Pro Bowl appearance in the process.
