The New Orleans Saints face off with the New York Jets on Saturday for their third preseason game of the year. When they step out onto the field, they'll have a pretty big name with them, as Drew Brees is set for his first action of the preseason according to Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.com.

This is extremely similar to last year. Drew Brees didn't appear in a preseason game until the third week, and then didn't play in the fourth and final game either.

That's likely the exact path Brees is on this year, and it makes all the sense in the world. Drew Brees is a superstar, a legend and a future Hall of Famer. He's nearing the end of his career, and doesn't exactly need a lot of tune-up games anymore.

At this point, all extra preseason time would serve to do is risk injury. If you need further proof that he doesn't need it, check his numbers from last year.

Despite having less than 500 pass attempts for the first time since 2004, Brees still managed monster stats. He threw for 3,993 yards and 32 touchdowns compared to only five interceptions. He also had a ridiculous 74.4 completion percentage.

Clearly, Drew Brees didn't need much warming up last year, and he likely won't need it again this year.

Still, the New Orleans Saints are giving him some time in the preseason. Although it isn't clear how long he'll play this week, don't expect Brees out there all night. He'll likely get a series or two, maybe three.

After that, he'll be shut down for the rest of the preseason – as he prepares for another MVP-caliber year.
