Little has been said about the looming contract extension for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas. It appears general manager Mickey Loomis wants to keep it that way.

Thomas is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is due for a lucrative contract in the near future. According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Loomis refused to give an update on the negotiations:

He said that he won’t comment on any talks that have gone on or might go on with Thomas about a new deal.

This is not the most encouraging update for fans who hope the Saints will retain Thomas for the long haul. He arrived as a steal for New Orleans with the 47th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old has since become the focal point of the Saints' passing attack by hauling in 321 passes for 3,787 yards and 23 touchdowns in his career.

It is safe to say that Thomas is due for a lucrative payday. He can thank Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. for setting the market with a deal that pays him $18 million a year. Considering their similar stature as two of the elite wideouts in the league, Thomas is likely looking for the same deal.

Although the price tag is undoubtedly steep for New Orleans' pockets, the Saints cannot risk losing such an integral part of their offense after this season. The Saints have high expectations; it will become much more difficult for them if they do not have Thomas in the mix.
