The New Orleans Saints chose to sign Jameis Winston, making him the backup to Drew Brees next season. Following the surprising move, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis opened up about the move to bring in Winston on SiriusXM NFL Radio (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk):

“The one thing that we’ll miss here with the offseason and the OTAs and the minicamps is that’s an opportunity for some of the guys who are new to get a lot of work in, so we’re not going to have that opportunity … But look, with Jameis, we had a chance to add a talented player who we thought a lot of coming out of Florida State and then thought a lot of playing against him the last few years. So it’s a chance to add a guy into that room that has a lot of talent, and we’ll see where it goes. No different than what we did with Teddy Bridgewater.”

When the Saints signed Teddy Bridgewater in 2018, they brought him in as insurance behind Brees. At the same time, it gave them a quarterback that they could help earn a payday elsewhere.

Of course, after two seasons in New Orleans, Bridgewater signed a lucrative contract with the Carolina Panthers this offseason. While Winston has had more success than Bridgewater as a starter, the purpose is the same for him.

Even though he has turnover issues, Winston is still 26 years old and Loomis views him as a talented player. Some may believe that Winston could be the successor to Brees, but it appears could be a one-and-done player in New Orleans and eventually seek his fortunes elsewhere.
