The New Orleans Saints’ attempt to bring in a veteran running back last year did not work out so well as the Adrian Peterson experiment ended up failing miserably. But that might not deter them from giving it another go.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, free-agent Jamaal Charles is set to visit New Orleans on Wednesday.

Charles, 31, played a backup role for the Denver Broncos last season after appearing in just eight games over his last two injury-hit years with the Kansas City Chiefs. The two-time First-Team All-Pro back had 296 rushing yards with one touchdown and added 129 receiving yards in 14 appearances for Denver.

The Saints could use more depth at running back since Mark Ingram will miss the first four games of the season after violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. The team has previously said it had no plans to add a veteran running back to take his place. But it seems they might be having a change of heart.

Reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Alvin Kamara is set to take on a starring role for the Saints while Ingram is out. However, his current backups-Trey Edmunds, Jonathan Williams, Daniel Lasco, and rookie Boston Scott-don’t appear to be of the highest quality, at least on paper.

With his age and his injury history, it’s unlikely that Charles is still capable of producing at the high level that he did during his peak. But maybe after getting a closer look at their other options, perhaps the Saints want to see if Charles can still be a better bet for them for the four games that Ingram will miss.
