How often does a player that led the league in passing yards find himself without a starting job the following year? Well, that's the situation Jameis Winston finds himself in now after signing with the New Orleans Saints.

After Tampa Bay signed six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Winston's chances to be an NFL starter began to shrink even though the former No. 1 pick threw for 5,109 yards in 2019. Rather than search for a starting job, Winston elected to sign a one-year deal with the Saints to be the backup for veteran star Drew Brees.

“Just understanding where I’m at in my career,” Winston said when asked why he chose the Saints knowing he couldn’t compete for the starting job with Brees, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.

“I’ve done some great things with the Bucs. I’m going to miss being a starting quarterback. But you never know what happens. I think this is just a great and unique step to join Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints and learn from him. Learn from one of the best to ever do it and make a great transition in my career.

While Winston won't be starting for New Orleans, the team's backup last season, Teddy Bridgewater played five games after a hand injury kept Brees sidelined. With that said, it's possible Winston could find his way onto the field next season.

“There’s a proverb. Humility comes before honor. So I have to humble myself and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be with Drew Brees and be with the New Orleans Saints and just prepare. Just prepare for when my next opportunity is going to present itself,” Jameis Winston furthered.

Although Winston led the NFL in passing yards in 2019, he did also throw an atrocious 30 interceptions. Now, he will have a great opportunity to learn behind one of the best QBs of all time in Brees.
