Jameis Winston decided to sign with the New Orleans Saints this offseason and took a big pay cut in the process.

While there was lots of speculation that Winston wanted to be a starter next season, it became clear that teams already had other starting quarterbacks in mind.

That left Winston with fewer options in free agency after not returning to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and it also left him with fewer opportunities to earn a large paycheck with his new team.

As for the details of his contract with the Saints, Winston will be making considerably less money than he would have as a starter, according to ESPN's Field Yates:

Jameis Winston’s one-year contract with the Saints carries a base value of $1.1M, per source. He got a $148,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $952,000 and $3.4M is available in incentives. Jameis prioritized the chance to learn and grow as a player.

The money certainly isn't what Winston wanted it to be when he entered free agency, but signing with the Saints makes a lot of sense for him when it comes to learning under Drew Brees.

Winston showcased his potential with the Bucs, and if he wants to once again become a full-time starter in the NFL, he'll need to improve the turnover issues and other aspects of his game.

And just like Teddy Bridgewater was able to learn from Brees and land a huge contract with the Carolina Panthers, Winston could do the same with a successful run with the Saints.
