New Orleans Saints rookie defensive end Marcus Davenport participated in practice on Saturday for the first time in nearly three weeks and is on track to make his preseason debut in their next game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday.

“I anticipate him being able to work this week and get some playing time,” Saints head coach Payton said per Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune.

Davenport, the 14th overall pick in this year's draft, has had a couple of injury setbacks this offseason. He underwent thumb surgery a couple of months ago. He has also missed the majority of training camp as well as the Saints’ first two preseason games due to a lingering groin injury, but he's finally returning to full health.

Davenport participated in limited drills Saturday and took some extra reps after practice. If his progress continues at its current rate, he should be ready to be a full participant during joint practices with the Chargers this Wednesday and Thursday.

Big things are expected of the rookie this season after the Saints traded two first-round picks in order to jump up in the draft and take him. While some believe he is still a raw talent who needs more time to develop, the Saints will be hoping he can make an immediate impact as a consistent pass rushing threat opposite Cameron Jordan starting this year.

The Saints fully believe their championship window is still very much open. If Davenport’s addition can provide a better pass rush to an already significantly improved defense, then their chances of contending this season should get a big boost as well.
