It appears as though the New Orleans Saints will be without superstar wide receiver Michael Thomas for longer than initially expected, according to a Tuesday evening report from Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. The NFL.com tandem is reporting that Thomas has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain that is “worse than originally believed” and is now expected to miss “several weeks” of action.

However, no concrete timeline has been set for his return as Pelissero believes that Thomas will need to help determine when he is able to return based on how he feels. Although Thomas is one of the toughest players in the league considering the fact that his durability has never been an issue, it will be interesting to see how soon the All-Pro wideout is able to return to the field for the Saints.

Michael Thomas originally suffered the setback during New Orleans' Week 1 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers while contributing very little to the Saints' momentous victory. After catching just three passes from quarterback Drew Brees for a mere 17 yards, it was revealed that Thomas had sustained an ankle injury of some nature. Now, it appears as though that ankle injury is indeed a significant one.

In Thomas' extended absence, the Saints will no doubt turn to the trio of tight end Jared Cook, fellow wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, and the Swiss Army knife that is Taysom Hill. Of course, Saints do-it-all running back Alvin Kamara will surely feature heavily on offense moving forward.
