New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees came under fire for comments he made in June regarding players' decisions to kneel during the national anthem.

Brees previously said he would “never agree” with players choosing to kneel during the anthem, prompting backlash from players around the NFL, including some of his Saints teammates.

The veteran quarterback quickly apologized for his remarks and addressed the team, and Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas said the team has reached an understanding with its star signal-caller.

Thomas had been openly critical of Brees on Twitter immediately following Brees' comments.

However, it appears the conversations that have taken place in the months since have somewhat assuaged any doubts about where Brees stands on issues of equality and social justice.

Brees again commented on peaceful protests on Saturday. He said while he will continue to stand, he will “acknowledge and respect” players choosing to kneel during the anthem (via The Guardian):

“I acknowledge and respect anyone who chooses to kneel or any other form of peaceful protest to bring attention to social injustice and system racism that so many have endured and continue to endure in our country,” Brees continued, adding that he “always will support and advocate for black and brown communities in the fight for social justice”.

Brees also reiterated he missed the mark with his initial comments, citing the need for more awareness and understanding on matters of advocacy for Black communities.

Thomas seems to be indicating any internal issues have been resolved. Simultaneously, it is clear the Saints will continue to demand more from their quarterback as the leader of the franchise.
