The New Orleans Saints have been looking to fortify its receiving corps throughout the course of the 2018 NFL season. It appears they have found their next signing courtesy of the Washington Redskins.

Wide receiver Simmie Cobbs has spent the 2018 campaign on Washington's practice squad. According to Ben Standig of NBC Sports Washington, New Orleans has signed him prior to their Week 15 matchup:

The New Orleans Saints signed Cobbs off the Redskins practice squad Friday, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Washington.

The news certainly deals a blow to fans in Washington. Cobbs had been one of the most intriguing prospects on their roster. As a result, the Saints did not hesitate to pull the trigger on signing him.

When New Orleans expressed interest, Washington attempted to counter by offering Cobbs a promotion to the active roster. However, it seems there were a number of factors that ultimately led to him picking the Saints.

Cobbs was a standout receiver at Indiana before going undrafted. He showed plenty of promise in the preseason after registering seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown. Despite his promise, Washington still opted to keep him on the practice squad. It is unclear why they chose to keep him stashed away considering the abysmal state of their receiving corps. He could have undoubtedly brought an explosive element to this lackluster offense.

Cobbs will now have the opportunity to play alongside one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in Drew Brees. The Saints have been adamant about providing Brees with as many weapons to work with as possible. It is safe to say that Cobbs has the potential to etch out a role for himself down the final stretch of the season.
