The New Orleans Saints don't have the most ideal salary cap situation in the NFL right now. In fact, they entered Saturday with the worst cap space in the league, being over the limit by a dizzying total of $76 million. To ease the situation, the Saints made a couple of moves this weekend by converting a couple of 2022 compensation packages into signing bonuses, including that of wide receiver Michael Thomas'.

Via Field Yates of ESPN:

Source: the Saints’ cap moves are underway, as they’ve converted $14.565M of Michael Thomas’ compensation for 2022 and $18,206,608 of OT Ryan Ramczyk’s compensation for 2022 into signing bonuses, creating $26.217M in cap space.

Thomas did not play a single snap in the 2021 NFL season due to a problem in his surgically-repaired ankle.

With Thomas out, the Saints struggled mightily in their passing attack. They were last in the league in passing yards per game and second-worst in pass completion percentage.

The Saints could still cut Thomas this year, but that would also mean that New Orleans will be left with a massive $22.7 million dead cap, so that option is very likely not being discussed in team meetings these days.

Thomas is still just 28, and he could be due for a big comeback in 2022. He has 5,950 receiving yards and 32 touchdowns on 510 receptions in his career.
