In a surprising move on Saturday, the Detroit Lions released veteran running back Theo Riddick. Riddick won't be in free agency for long as the New Orleans Saints are already showing interest in him.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Theo Riddick will visit the Saints. Riddick spent his first six seasons in the NFL with the Lions but now he'll have a chance to choose where he plays.

As for the Saints, adding Riddick would be a nice insurance policy for Alvin Kamara. Latavius Murray is the second running back but he doesn't have the skillset that Kamara does.

Riddick isn't nearly as talented as Kamara but at the least, he can be a reliable pass-catcher out of the backfield. In the past four seasons, Riddick has caught over 53 passes in each season.

Riddick doesn't bring much as a ball-carrier but with him being a receiving threat, he fits the Saints offense perfectly. Of course, Kamara is going to be the featured back but having another threatening back in the passing game would be optimal.

Adding a weapon like Riddick could prove to be beneficial for Drew Brees. After all, Sean Payton knows that you can never have enough firepower on offense.

Earlier this offseason, the Saints lost Mark Ingram to free agency to the Baltimore Ravens. As a result, they replaced him with Murray.

While Ingram was in New Orleans, the Saints used him to allow Kamara to stay fresh throughout the season. Now, adding Riddick could add another piece that gives Kamara some rest.
