The Tennessee Titans made a splash with the signing of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The New Orleans Saints were on the verge of pulling off quite a heist had the NFL not interfered.

According to ESPN's Mike Triplett, the Saints attempted to do an unethical sign-and-trade in order to bring in Jadeveon Clowney under their salary cap:

A source confirmed that the Saints explored the idea of a unique sign-and-trade deal with an unspecified team to help them fit Clowney's salary under the cap, as the NFL Network first reported. However, the NFL said such a deal would not be allowed.

Reports indicate that the Saints were hoping for another team to sign Jadeveon Clowney and pay off his signing bonus before trading him to fit under their salary cap. Meanwhile, the other team would have gotten a second-round pick in return but the NFL was clearly having none of out and decided to step in to prevent it from happening.

Despite their failed attempts, it is indicative of general manager Mickey Loomis' efforts to build a championship-caliber roster. New Orleans finds itself in familiar territory with a limited amount of cap space to make it come to fruition. OF course, that did not stop them from trying to poach Jadeveon Clowney from the Titans at the last second, which may have led to the confusion regarding the initial reports of his signing.

The Saints will now move forward and try to meet the high expectations for the 2020 NFL season with the players at their disposal.
