Ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints have made a decision with their coaching staff. According to Jay Glazer, Sean Payton has agreed to a new five-year extension with New Orleans.

The timing of this deal is noticeable, with the Saints preparing to take part in a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game. Nevertheless, New Orleans will have Payton as head coach through the 2024 season.

Payton was entering the final year of his current contract, which he signed with the organization in 2016. Fans in New Orleans will likely be thrilled to have another five seasons with him.

Since becoming the head coach in 2006, the Saints have won 119 games, including eight wins in the playoffs. Above all, Payton was crucial to New Orleans winning the Super Bowl in 2009.

While Payton has resided in Louisiana, he and Drew Brees have been considered one of the best quarterback-coach tandems in the NFL. It's hard to argue that they aren't right behind Tom Brady and Bill Belichick in that category.

Over the past couple of seasons, there have rumors that the longtime Saints coach could return to the Dallas Cowboys as their head coach.

Prior to becoming the Saints head coach in 2006, Sean Payton served as Dallas's assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Those rumors can now be put to rest with Payton deciding to stay with the Saints for another five seasons.

One person who may have been more excited than Saints fans to see Sean Payton sign an extension: Jason Garrett.
