NFL teams are going to be very busy over the next week as teams cut down their rosters to 53 players, and Sean Payton is well aware of that. During his recent media availability, Payton indicated other teams should be paying attention to his secondary.

“We'll have everyone's roster and to some degree you're predicting, you're looking at positions that are heavy. So, if I'm another team and I'm in need of a safety, I'm studying our safety depth because I feel like there's probably three teams in the league that are deep at safety,” he explained.

“There'll be three or four teams deep at tight end. And those are the target teams you look at specifically per formation or position. I think every team in the league right now would say, ‘hey, we're deep in some areas, we're a little thin here.’ Then, who's deep in an area where we're thin?”

Right before rosters get cutdown, there are often a flurry of trades for late-round picks in order for teams to circumvent the waiver process.

Payton also made sure to emphasize that the Saints' front office is paying close attention to what is happening around the league, and that they might make some moves.

“You'll see some trades take place before that cutdown to help fill needs, but the pro department is on top of and has watched all these preseason games, not just ours, and graded the players and look closely at young guys, guys they don't know as much about.”

Unfortunately the waiver order is the same as in the NFL draft, so the Saints will be toward the back of the pack when it comes to picking up players.

With the way Payton is talking, it seems like the Saints might make a trade or two instead of waiting for waivers.
