Earlier this week, the New Orleans Saints decided part ways with veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

Although this was an abrupt end to his brief tenure with New Orleans, head coach Sean Payton has voiced that the door is open toward possibly bringing Marshall back on board at some point down the line, via James Parks of 247 Sports.

“The decision was, we had an opportunity to claim a player,” Payton said. “And we feel like Ted’s (Ginn) close to coming back. We still might be in a position to possibly bring Brandon back, but yesterday we needed a roster spot.”

Marshall had been inactive in each of the last four games with the Saints. There had initially been the hope that be a factor in the passing game by giving them another proven receiving threat. Payton had spoken quite highly of Marshall, boasting about his ability to be an impact player in the red zone due to his size and catching ability in traffic.

Prior to joining the Saints, he played in seven games with the Seattle Seahawks, making 11 catches on 23 targets for 136 receiving yards and a touchdown. Marshall’s role was minor, allowing the younger talent at the position to take on more prominent roles. Although he has been able to prove that he’s past his injury issues, he has struggled to make a strong impact in the passing game over the last few years.

Marshall could still latch onto the Saints down the line this year in the final three weeks of the regular season. Meanwhile, other teams may look to bring him aboard because of his resume or to add depth to the wide receiver position. He has reached another crossroad in his career that may lead to him fully assessing if he wants to play any l0nger. There are plenty of options on the table for him at this point in time.
