The New Orleans Saints are preparing for their biggest game of the 2018 NFL season. Unfortunately, it appears they will be without tight end Benjamin Watson.

Watson had been unable to practice all week while dealing with appendicitis. According to ESPN's Katherine Terrell, he has now been listed as inactive for the NFC Championship Game versus the Los Angeles Rams:

New Orleans Saints tight end Ben Watson won't play this week against the Rams, according to a source. Watson missed two practices due to appendicitis, and while he's been able to avoid surgery so far, the team decided he'll be inactive this week.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for Watson. The veteran had already announced the 2018 campaign would be his last. There is a good chance that Sunday's game could be his last with the Saints if they are unable to advance.

The update on Watson deals a crushing blow to the Saints offense. He enjoyed modest production in his career finale by registering 35 catches for 400 yards and two touchdowns this year. It should be noted that one of his best games of the season came against Los Angeles in early November when he finished the game with three catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

It is no secret that the Rams linebackers have been susceptible to tight ends this season. The Saints will need one of their other many weapons to find a way to exploit them. Perhaps utility man Taysom Hill will be tasked with carrying out Watson's duties this week.
