The New Orleans Saints have made it clear that they will move forward with quarterback Drew Brees for as long as he intends to play. As a result, this has left quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in a rather peculiar position heading into free agency.

Bridgewater made headlines last offseason when he reportedly turned down more money to remain in New Orleans on a one-year deal. He said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio will not be letting his heart get in the way of any business decisions:

“Last year everyone said I turned down X amount of dollars to go back to New Orleans. Honestly, for me, I’m a businessman but I’m a smart businessman, Bridgewater said. “I don’t make decisions with my heart, I use my brain to think things through. Last year I made the decision to return to New Orleans and it worked out for the better for me. This year, it’s one of those deals where like I said it’ll be the same thing. I don’t try to make any decision of the impulse of my heart. I think things through and go from there.”

Bridgewater's approach certainly paid huge dividends for him in the 2019 NFL season after quarterback Drew Brees suffered a thumb injury that sidelined him for five games. He was able to show plenty of promise as a bonafide starter by throwing for 1,205 yards, nine touchdowns, and two interceptions while going undefeated during his time under center.

Although the job is far from done after the Saints suffered their third straight heartbreaking loss in the playoffs, Bridgewater's comments appear to indicate that he could be ready for a change of scenery this offseason. The timing of his resurgence should garner him plenty of attention from teams scouring the market for a potential starter.

While the prospect of losing Teddy Bridgewater to free agency deals a crucial blow to New Orleans' depth under center, they can take solace in the possibility of backup Taysom Hill sticking around for the long haul.
