The New Orleans Saints have struggled mightily over the past two games since wide receiver Michael Thomas was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Although he has since managed to log in some practice time heading into Week 4 versus the Detroit Lions, the reigning Offensive Player of the Year is hardly a lock to play.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Saints will determine Thomas' status based on his risk of aggravating the injury.

“He has practiced on a limited basis for the last two days for the New Orleans Saints,” Rapoport said. “This is a good sign, however, the fact that he’s trending well does not necessarily mean he’s going to play on Sunday. The Saints are being cautious. They know it’s a long season. Obviously they’d like a win, but they are going to make sure there’s not risk of re-injury before putting him back on the field.”

While New Orleans may be reeling from the back-to-back losses they suffered in recent weeks, it is not enough for them to insert Thomas back into the lineup before he is 100 percent ready. Their desire to avoid any potential setbacks with the two-time All-Pro is certainly understandable since there is still plenty of football left in the 2020 NFL season.

With Thomas sidelined, Emmanuel Sanders, Tre'Quan Smith, and Alvin Kamara have headed the receiving corps for quarterback Drew Brees in the passing game. The onus would fall on them to carry the offense once again in Week 4 if the Saints opt to take a cautious approach with his recovery.
