Alvin Kamara might be the most explosive playmaker in the NFL. Many believe Michael Thomas is the best wide receiver in football. Cameron Jordan is one of the most reliable, versatile, and effective defensive lineman in the game.

The New Orleans Saints, obviously, have done exceedingly well to surround Drew Brees with upper-echelon talent in the twilight of the future Hall-of-Famer's career. Just because Brees is well past his playing prime and far older than most of his teammates, though, hardly means the Saints' franchise signal-caller has ceded responsibilities as his team's pre-game hype man.

The 40-year-old proved as much in the moments leading up to kickoff of the Saints' preseason debut against the Minnesota Vikings on Friday night, comparing a football game to a war and each individual snap to a battle that could ultimately decide it in a fiery pre-game speech to his teammates.

Brees, 40, enjoyed perhaps the finest season of his storied career in 2018, throwing for 32 touchdowns, just five interceptions, and 3,992 yards while completing a staggering 74.4 percent of his passes. He finished second in MVP voting to Kansas City Chiefs wunderkind Patrick Mahomes, who put up one of the most statistically gaudy seasons in NFL history as a first-time starter. Unfortunately for the Saints, Brees wasn’t quite at his best when it mattered most, throwing for 249 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in his team’s heartbreaking overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game.

No one expects any drop-off from Drew Brees in 2019, by the way. He was ranked No. 2 overall in this year's edition of the NFL Top 100 behind Rams superstar defensive lineman Aaron Donald.
