After two years in the play-in tournament, the San Antonio Spurs made it clear that they are in a rebuilding phase by trading All-Star Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks for essentially three first-round picks and a pick swap.

The team also traded away Derrick White last season and let Lonnie Walker IV join the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. All things considered, the Spurs will be looking to develop their young pieces from the draft.

Also, the Spurs are potentially quiet in free agent signings because they might be part of a big trade, in which they would absorb Russell Westbrook’s contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

With that being said, here are the grades for their most notable free agent move until now.

San Antonio Spurs 2022 NBA Free Agency Grades

Gorgui Dieng: C+

Perhaps the most notable name the Spurs signed this offseason was center Gorgui Dieng, who played 16 regular-season games with them in the 2020-21 season, which means the team is not looking for big names, at least for now.

The deal is for one year, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The salary amount has not been disclosed.

A 36.7% career-shooter on three-pointers, Dieng provides help to the bottom-five team in the league in three-point attempts, as well as some floor spacing compared to Jakob Pöltl, who has been in trade rumors throughout the offseason.

The former Louisville Cardinal is a bit familiar with the San Antonio culture and should know that the team’s goals are not at the top of the rankings. He should be a solid backup on one-year, but should be prepared to get some extra minutes if Pöltl is traded.

Dieng should be one of the most experienced players in the locker room, where he will likely be more impactful than on the court.

Dominick Barlow: B+

Since the Spurs are quiet in terms of signings, Dominick Barlow’s two-way deal could be the most beneficial long term.

The former four-star recruit played last season in the Overtime Elite League, averaging 14.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.2 blocks and 1.08 steals in 25 games, before going undrafted in June. He shot 53.0% from the field and 33.9% beyond the arc and was considered one of the best undrafted prospects by Yahoo! Sports.

Barlow is only 19 years old, and it only cost the Spurs a two-way spot to acquire the forward. San Antonio will be able to closely monitor his development in the G League and will have the chance to secure him for more seasons, should he outperform his deal.

Isaiah Roby’s waiver claim: C+

After being waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Isaiah Roby was quickly claimed off waivers by the Spurs. He appeared in 45 games last season, averaging 10.1 points while shooting 51.4% from the field and 44.4% from three.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker missed a lot of games early in his career due to injuries, but managed to play significant minutes these past two years.

At 24 years old, Roby should provide some young depth and competition to the rookies Jeremy Sochan and Malaki Branham. Should the rookies struggle early in the season, Roby could fill the gap in a short term, but could also take away minutes from them.

Overall, San Antonio has been very quiet in signing new players, so it might be a sign Gregg Popovich and the Spurs are looking into building the team on draft selections and developing those picks on the floor.
