Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks and Kevin Durant have had a strong relationship for years now. The former Oklahoma City Thunder head man coached Durant from 2008 to 2015, and the four-time scoring champion was said to be disappointed to see him leave when Brooks was fired by the organization.

Many suspected that Brooks’ signing with the Wizards in April gave the team a fighting chance in the widely covered free agency race for Durant’s services. This was proven wrong, as he eventually left Washington off of his shortlist before joining the Golden State Warriors.

As a friend and former mentor, Brooks respects Durant’s decision and feels as though the 27-year old forward had earned the right to make it.

Brooks, from Chris Mannix's podcast for The Vertical:

“Every player has that right to be a free agent. With KD he made the decision that was best for him and he did it. I have a lot of respect for him.”

Brooks took a lot from his time working with Durant and feels as though KD's quality as a human surpasses his quality as a player:

“I'm happy that he's happy. Kevin is an amazing teammate. The person that he is is better than the player that he is.”

Like many fans around the world, Brooks seems excited by the mouth-watering potential that the already great Warriors team possesses:

“I'm excited to see how (the Warriors) play. That team on paper is going to be one of the greatest teams in the history of the game.”
