The 2018 NFL Draft quarterback pool is a confusing one. No one really seems sure who is exactly what. That being said, at least according to some scouts, presumed top prospects Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are actually better off staying in school instead of turning pro.

This is at least hinted at in a recent Pro Football Talk column.

To be clear: This is according to scouts and not general managers. The former isn't as invested in winning in the realm of public perception as the latter happens to be.

The basic idea is that UCLA's Josh Rosen needs another year to mature and develop as a leader. That all seems like weird hogwash to me, as the idea that a scout can tell if someone needs to mature from watching film seems silly. Then again, I am here on a computer and those guys scout players on the daily.

As for USC's Sam Darnold, the idea is that he just needs to improve his overall game. A fine thing to be concerned about, yet not something he can't fix while being paid to do so while on a National Football League roster.

Both of these guys are projected first-round picks. No matter what the scouts believe, going back to college might help them with their games, but will almost certainly do nothing for their draft stock.

Rosen, for what it is worth, has openly discussed not having his mind made up yet.

“Everything matters when it comes to a decision like that, so I’ll take up all the different sorts of variables into the equation,” Rosen said Tuesday, via the Los Angeles Times. “Maybe in a few more weeks I’ll give you a good answer.”
