Just when Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Chris Carson was having success burning his name into the minds of football fans, he suffered what looked like a serious ankle injury, putting his season into jeopardy.

Late in the Seahawks’ game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Carson was tackled while making a rushing attempt. He went down and couldn’t get up under his own power. He was put in an air cast and had to be carted off the field, signifying that the injury was a serious one.

While he was unable to finish the game, Carson helped the team get a 46-18 win by rushing for 42 yards on 12 carries.

After the game, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was asked about the status of Carson, per Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com.

The seventh-round rookie suffered a “significant” ankle injury, coach Pete Carroll told reporters after the game. Carroll didn't elaborate on how much time Carson would miss, but confirmed he will get an MRI soon.

Unfortunately, that MRI yielded troubling results. While talking with 710 ESPN Seattle, Carroll stated that Carson has a fracture just below the knee, in addition to what likely is a serious high ankle sprain. The Seahawks placed him on injured reserve shortly after the results were revealed.

Losing Carson is a setback for the Seahawks’ ground attack, which has relied mostly on the rookie’s legs. Carson leads the team with 208 rushing yards on 49 carries.

Still, Seahawks have other options to choose from to lead the backfield. Thomas Rawls, who topped the team in rushing yards and touchdowns in 2015, was a healthy inactive in Week 4 but is likely to suit up if Carson misses time. There’s also Eddie Lacy and J.D. McKissic. Lacy showed signs of life in the Colts game, as he picked up 52 yards on 11 rushes, while McKissic came out of nowhere to record 65 total yards and two touchdowns.
